Ideas can be communicated to masses without developing a connection with them but customized and acceptable solutions can only get through when we are able to develop a channel of communication built on trust and understanding, especially in medical field.
Listen to understand, not to respond ,bcos in the haste of speaking we miss upon more information or even if we are listening with our minds being preoccupied with solutions,we receive nothing further and fail to bridge the gap of communication.Listen with a empty mind with no pre-assumptions and decisions.
When in speaking position use your words cautiously, use only the language that patient connects and understands, speak slowly because mind thinks 4 times faster than our speaking speed, generating many ideas and sentences at a time,so choose wisely amongst those. This happens by default when we have listened patiently and understood the type of patient profile.
So sequence summarized as
During interpersonal communication be a
1) Good listener first
2) Good interpreter
3) Good evaluater
4) Lastly a good Speaker.
